History and Geography

Waterbury, Vermont is a town in Washington County of about 5,000 people. Located in the center of the state, it has easy access to Burlington and Montpelier and is located directly adjacent to the popular tourist town of Stowe. Chartered in 1763, the town was not settled until 1783. Most of the early settlers arrived from Waterbury, Connecticut and named their new home after their old town.

With its central location, Waterbury became a prime location for many state services to take root. The Central Vermont Railroad came to town in 1849, and the Green Mountain Seminary was built in 1869. The Vermont State Asylum opened in 1891 and grew to house 1,400 patients. Renamed the Vermont State Hospital, it remained an active institution until the 1980s, when the patient population decreased to under 200. The empty buildings were then put into use for state offices.

Waterbury has an unfortunate history of flooding. Like many other towns in the area, it suffered from massive flooding in 1927. Twenty lives were lost and extensive damage was done to area homes and businesses. After the town recovered, the Army Corps of Engineers built the Waterbury Dam to help control future floodwaters. However, Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 again brought flooding to Waterbury, rendering much of the Vermont State Hospital and the state offices in the complex unusable.

Industry and Commerce

Similar to many other towns in Vermont, Waterbury’s industries began with agriculture and the mills powered by the river. Sheep thrived here, but farmers soon turned over to dairy farming, producing butter and cheese to sell. Mills produced lumber, wicker, leather, alcohol, bobbins, baseball bats, and other items that were shipped throughout the region and county. Several retail shops remained family owned and operated for over 100 years in this small close-knit community.

With nearby Mount Mansfield, skiing, and other recreational activities the town has grown into a tourist destination. Businesses supporting tourism including restaurants and a variety of shops thrive in this vibrant community. There are also several large regionally and nationally known businesses here including:

Ben and Jerry’s (factory tours are given in Waterbury)
Cabot Creamery
Alchemist microbrewery
Cold Hollow Cider Mill
Green Mountain Coffee Roasters
Lake Champlain Chocolates
