History and Geography
Located in northwestern Vermont between Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains is the town of South Burlington. Originally joined with Burlington Township in 1763, it was incorporated as a town in 1865 and a city in 1971. It is now the largest city in Vermont by area, covering 29.6 square miles, and the second largest by population with 18,000 residents.
With over 8,000 households, thriving businesses, and numerous recreational activities, South Burlington prides itself on balancing neighborhood living with regional and national commerce. Home to Ben & Jerry’s and Magic Hat Brewing, visitors and locals alike are attracted to all this city has to offer.
With warm summers and snowy winters, there are many recreational activities available in the region. Skiing is nearby, and there are many local parks including Veteran’s Memorial Park, scenic Overlook Park with views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks, and Red Rocks Park and beach on the banks of Lake Champlain.

Nearby Burlington also contributes many jobs to the region with the University of Vermont and the University of Vermont Medical Center. The Vermont Teddy Bear Company, Bruegger’s, Seventh Generation, and many other companies also call this area home.
With its split from Burlington, South Burlington doesn’t have its own downtown area. City planners hope to change that by creating a new City Center area of mixed use retail, residential, and recreational space. This area will further expand the already thriving business community.
The Region
South Burlington is located in the Lake Champlain region of the state. Lake Champlain is a large freshwater body, with borders in New York, Vermont, and Quebec. Named after a French explorer, ports all along this lake were important for the rise of commerce throughout the region.
On the other side of the city are the Green Mountains, the range giving the state its nickname, “The Green Mountain State”. Part of the Appalachian chain, these mountains provide excellent skiing and other winter sports in the winter. Many winter Olympians live and train in the area.
Fun Activities
The mountains also provide a summer retreat. Golfing, mountain biking, hiking, and other sports are available throughout the warmer months. Visitors are delighted with waterfalls and swimming holes that arise throughout the area. In the fall, the mountains are full of the famous New England fall foliage. Maple syrup, scenic drives, and harvest festivals are popular throughout the autumn months.
Whether to live, work, or visit, South Burlington, Vermont has something to offer for everyone. With an excellent school system, a thriving business community, and varied recreational activities, it is a prime example of a successful 21st century city.
